The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám - Illustrated by Edmund Dulac

‘The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám’ is a famous poem, originally written in Persian by poet, astronomer and mathematician Omar Khayyám. In 1859, Edward Fitzgerald translated this work for the first time from Persian into English: a translation that is still read and loved today.

The edition that we are selling of ‘The Rubáiyát’ was published in the early 1930s by Hodder and Stoughton, and uses Fitzgerald’s translation for the text. Not only that, but included in this book are twelve full-page, colour illustrations by Edmund Dulac. Dulac’s illustrations have become a notable accompaniment to Omar Khayyám’s writing, with each detailed artwork drawing out the dream-like quality and rich language of the poem.

The book itself has a deep blue cloth binding with gold gilt titling on the spine and front board. It is in good condition with only some signs of wear on the outside. The pages inside are clear, with no foxing. The illustrations themselves have been tipped in and have tissue guards.

‘The Rubáiyát’ is a gem of ancient yet Victorian poetry, telling a story of life, love and wine. Edmund Dulac’s illustrations, coupled together with Omar Khayyám’s quatrains, create a book you can truly get lost in. It is being sold for £40.
