Taught in many schools across the world and enjoyed by adults for decades, Lord of the Flies by William Golding has become a modern classic. The book tells the tale of a group of boys who struggle to survive as a group after their plane crashes on a deserted island.
Lord of the Flies was originally published in the UK in 1954 by Faber and Faber, but the copy that we are selling is a first American edition from 1955, published by Coward-McCann.
Golding started out as a school teacher and then enlisted in the navy during the Second World War; he drew on his experience of rambunctious schoolboys and the struggle for power when he was writing Lord of the Flies.
The physical book itself is in good condition despite not having its dust jacket. There is slight bumping on the top and bottom of the cloth-bound spine, but the titling is clear and unfaded. Inside, there is no damage or foxing to the pages – only some ageing on the edges of the paper.
Lord of the Flies is a gripping yet haunting story, shedding light on what it means to be a person (and a child) in a confusing world filled with people constantly struggling for power. Our first American edition of this classic novel is a perfect collectable – and readable – copy for all those returning to the story or reading it for the first time. It is being sold for £150.
