Morte D'Arthur by Alfred Lord Tennyson, Illustrated by Alberto Sangorski

With its beige, unembellished dust jacket, this illustrated edition of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s Morte D’Arthur is very unassuming from the outside. However, the inside bursts with colour and gold of Alberto Sangorski’s fabulous illustrations, brining to life this version of the classic British myth.

This illustrated edition of the poem Morte D’Arthur by Tennyson was published in 1912 by Chatto and Windus. The page design was produced by the Graphic Engraving Company, to (as the dust jacket states)  ‘faithfully reproduce in Gold and Colours upon ivory-surface paper, in facsimile of the Artist’s Original Drawings.’

Alberto Sangorski’s illustrations burst with colour and texture on the page, with the design and text by Sangorski illuminating Tennyson’s writing.

There have been many iterations of the Arthurian legends, but the poem, Morte D’Arthur, by Alfred Lord Tennyson was first published in 1842 and is a retelling of the last days of King Arthur (‘Morte D’Arthur’ means ‘The Death of Arthur’ in French).

The book comes with the original dust jacket, which is in a plastic sleeve to protect it. There is evidence on the inside that some of the pages were once slightly stuck together but this has limited effect on the illustration and text.

This book is a brilliantly detailed edition of a classic tale, reminiscent of the medieval setting of the Arthurian legends, with each page looking and feeling luxurious as you read. It is being sold for £150.
