Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, Illustrated by Edward McKnight Kauffer

Robinson Crusoe is often credited as being one of the first novels in the English language. The edition that we have on sale was published in 1929, over 200 years after the first edition, yet this book is still very special...

This edition of Robinson Crusoe is illustrated by Edward McKnight Kauffer. Included are eight full-page and hand-coloured illustrations, painted using layers of stencils in a process called pochoir, resulting in richly coloured and textured piece of art, scattered throughout the book.

The book itself is also exclusive: it was printed at the Glasgow University Press by Messrs. Robert MacLehose and Co. Ltd. as part of an limited run of 535 copies. The one we are selling is number 156. The pages of the book are made from all-rag paper, which is made from fibre rather than wood pulp, and thus is perfect for the hand-painted painted illustrations.

The exterior to the book has a textured effect to its binding, and silver embossed titling on the spine and design on the front board (in McKnight Kauffer’s style). It is an excellently-made book, part of an exclusive print run, and recounts one of literature’s most iconic stories alongside modern and bold illustrations. It is being sold for £200.
