This beloved and classic fantasy tale, originally published in 1937, has seen many forms throughout its nearly ninety-year lifespan. The Hobbit, written by J.R.R. Tolkien, became the origin for the chronicles that centred around Middle Earth, and Tolkien’s myriad of lore, language, and legend.
Our copy is a third edition, tenth impression of this renowned novel and was published in 1975.
Edition and impression are terms used by publishers and booksellers in order to identify the copy of a book that is being sold. Edition refers to each time a book is reedited or reformatted before being printed again, with a first edition being the original. Impression is the round of printing for each edition – it is very expensive and impractical to print all the books for an edition in one go (especially as it’s difficult to know how many are needed)! However, in the past, usually each impression was limited to a print run of one thousand copies.
Our copy is comes with its iconic dust jacket – its design famously drawn by Tolkien himself – and it has been laminated, but this means that it is in very good condition.
Inside the book itself, multiple coloured and black and white illustrations are included, depicting scenes of Rivendell, Hobbiton-across-the Water, conversation with Smaug, the Elven King’s gate, and many more. Our copy is also published by the original publishers of The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings series, George Allen & Unwin. It is being sold for £250.
