The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, by Arthur Conan Doyle

The stories and cases of Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson filled the pages of The Strand Magazine, and four novels, from 1887 to 1927. The official Conan Doyle canon includes fifty-six short stories, and twelve of them feature in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

These short stories were originally published in The Strand Magazine between 1891 and 1892, and were first collected into a book in 1892. The edition that we are selling was published by George Newnes Limited in 1898 and includes the original stories of the adventures of: ‘A Scandal in Bohemia’, ‘The Red-Headed League’, ‘A Case of Identity’, ‘The Boscombe Valley Mystery’, ‘The Five Orange Pips’, ‘The Man with the Twisted Lip’, ‘The Blue Carbuncle’, ‘The Speckled Band’, ‘The Engineer’s Thumb’, ‘Nobel Bachelor’, ‘Beryl Coronet’ and ‘The Copper Beeches’.

The book also includes numerous black and white illustrations by Sidney Paget, whose work frequently accompanied Conan Doyle’s writing in The Strand.

The edition of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes that we are selling does show some signs of wear: there is rubbing on the spine and on the edge of the boards, and some pen marks on the back board. However, the pages inside are clean and readable, with almost no sign of foxing.

This book is an icon in literary history and published at the time when Arthur Conan Doyle was still writing and creating cases for Holmes and Watson. It is perfect for any Sherlock Holmes fan or those looking to add an impressive and beloved book to their collection. It is being sold for £200.
