If you are looking for a stylish, vintage set of all of Shakespeare’s plays and poetry – in a modest four-volumes – then look no further!
This set of Shakespeare’s works, published by Nonesuch Press in 1953, is a great to display on a shelf or dip into whenever you're in the mood. The text and order of the works inside replicate the first folio publication of Shakespeare’s plays, and included in this edition are additional notes in the margins.
As these books were published in 1953, they are dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II, as she was coronated the same year!
Every play and poem attributed to Shakespeare is included in this four-volume set: one volume each for the history plays, comedies, tragedies, and poems (the latter including standalone poems such as ‘Venus and Adonis’ and ‘A Lover’s Complaint’, and all of Shakespeare’s sonnets).
The books themselves have gold titling, on an otherwise unassuming spine, but the boards are adorned with a colourful, marbled-style decoration and the edges have a red speckled design. There is some signs of ageing on the spines and some light foxing inside, near the end papers, but this is minimal.
The Nonesuch Press is known for printing collectable and high-quality sets of works, and this Shakespeare collection is no different. It is a great set to display on a shelf (without taking up too much space!) as well as to read and enjoy. It is being sold for £75.
