Metamorphoses by Ovid, Ltd. edition

This is a limited edition of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, numbered #1809/2750, published by the Folio Society. The volume comes complete with its matching solander/slipcase.

The book is fully bound in Nigerian goatskin leather by Lachenmaier, Reutlingen. It is typeset in Centaur by the Folio Society and printed on Vézille Ivoire laid paper by Memminger Mediencentrum, Germany.

The front board features a gilt design by Simon Brett, based on the classical painting Apollo and Daphne. Matching gilt titling appears on the spine of both the book and its slipcase. It measures 13 x 9¾ inches and top edge is gilt.

Ovid’s original epic poem is translated into English by Arthur Golding and edited by Madeline Forey. The volume includes an essay on Titian by Michael Prodger, along with numerous colour illustrations featuring Poesie and other works inspired by Metamorphoses by Titian. It also includes a beautiful colour frontispiece depicting The Rape of Europa.

This book remains in mint condition, having been carefully preserved in its original slipcase. The binding is tight and secure, while the pages show no visible signs of wear and appear as new. Its slipcase is also in excellent condition.

A beautiful example showcasing the craftsmanship of the Folio Society, this edition would make an excellent addition to a collection of classical literature, fine bindings or limited-edition books.
