The complete Lloyd’s Natural History set is diverse in its analysis of butterflies, moths, birds and mammals – but these two select volumes look uniquely at the world of monkeys!
This two-volume set, written by Henry O. Forbes, was published by Edward Lloyd, Limited, with the first book published in 1896 and the second in 1987. R. Bowdler Sharpe was the series editor for these books, and included in both volumes is a preface written by him.
The official title of the set is A Hand-Book to the Primates, and the two books include: a systematic index at the start of each book, 25 plates in the first volume, 24 plates in the second (including 8 folding maps!) and a full alphabetical index at the rear of volume two. All plates are in full colour, demonstrating in delightful detail, the different types of monkeys that Forbes was writing about.
The books themselves come in a maroon binding, with red speckled edges and gold-gilt titling on the spine and lines on the boards. The corners of the boards and the edges of the spines are slightly rubbed, but inside, the pages are clean and have very minimal foxing.
This two-volume set on monkeys is the perfect duo for those wanting to learn about a variety of primates through excellent detailed writing and colourful prints and maps, or those who are looking to collect Lloyd’s (or any other) natural history books. They are being sold for £75.
