Following on from the phenomenal science-fiction landmark that was Dune, Frank Herbert released the second book in the series, Dune Messiah, four years later, in 1969.
The copy of Dune Messiah that we are selling in the shop is a first edition, 2nd impression published in 1969 by G.P. Putnam’s Sons in America. Dune Messiah originally appeared in a shorter version in Galaxy Magazine from July to September of the same year, before it was released as a novel.
Our edition is a hardback copy with its original dust jacket in a protective plastic sleeve. There is a photo of Herbert on the back, and the wrapper illustration is credited to Jack Gaughan.
A quirky, yet informative, biography of Herbert is included on the inside of the dust jacket, stating that his work ‘had drawn on his studies of Oriental religion and undersea geology; he has also been a professional photographer, TV cameraman, radio new commentator, lay analyst, and oyster diver.’
This edition of Dune Messiah is a fantastic addition to any well-loved set of Dune books, or for any collector or fans of the series, new and old. And with the adaptation of Dune Messiah coming soon, why not get ahead of the rest and snag a first edition now? It is being sold for £500.
(We are also selling a first edition, 2nd impression of Children of Dune, which you can find out about here.)
