EDIT: This book has been sold, but we have lots of other Tolkien books available in our shop. Please email us if you have any questions or queries.
A blend of Tolkien’s academic, fiction, and poetic writing, this second edition of Tree and Leaf is perfect for any Lord of the Rings or Hobbit fan.
Our second edition, 1st impression of this book, is strangely the first of its kind; this was the first edition including the poem ‘Mythopoeia’. The book is split into three sections: an essay, a short story, and a poem.
The essay is called ‘On Fairy Stories’, which (as described on the front flap of the dust jacket of the book) ‘rescues [fairy stories] from the academics’ and from ‘those who would relegate them to “juvenilia”’. The essay originally came from a lecture which was given at the University of St. Andrews in 1938.
The short story, called 'Leaf by Niggle', adds to Tolkien’s oeuvre of brilliantly-detailed and imaginative fantasy.
And the final section, the poem called ‘Mythopoeia’, is described as ‘the making of myths’, and is in fact quoted in ‘On Fairy Stories’, tying together the book.
This updated edition of Tree and Leaf was published in 1988 by Unwin and Hyman and includes a new introduction by Tolkien’s son, Christopher Tolkien. (The publishers of most of Tolkien’s works, George Allen and Unwin, merged with the other publishing company, Bell and Hyman, just two years earlier, so this Tolkien book is technically under a different publisher.)
The book has a different cover to the original, and is in excellent condition. In the original introductory note by Tolkien, he says that Tree and Leaf may ‘be found interesting, especially by those to whom The Lord of the Rings has given pleasure.’ So if you are a Lord of the Rings fan, or a collector of all things Tolkien, then this is the book for you. It is being sold for £100.
We are also selling a first edition of this book, as well as various other first editions and uncommon books from the world of Tolkien. Check out the rest of the books on our online showcase for more!
