The Tempest was one of the later plays written by William Shakespeare: the play is thought to have been written in 1610 or 1611, but wasn’t published until 1623, after Shakespeare’s death.
The book that we have on sale is an illustrated version of The Tempest, published in 1908 by Chapman and Hall. Included are seventeen full-page, colour illustrations by Paul Woodroffe and multiple other black and white drawings amongst the text.
There is also accompanying music by Joseph Moorat, scattered across the book, building on the fairy-tale and mythical elements of Woodroffe’s illustration and Shakespeare’s writing.
This book is a great shelf piece, with its green cloth binding and gold gilt. It has some rubbing on the spine and slight foxing on the interior pages, but is in good condition overall.
Woodroffe’s illustrations, blended with Moorat’s songs and Shakespeare’s original and timeless writing, creates the perfect book for any collector, whether to keep or to gift. It is being sold for £150.
We also have another edition of The Tempest, illustrated by Edmund Dulac, for sale for those who are particular fans of this play or would like some choice! We have a few other illustrated Shakespeare editions for sale as well. Please get in touch if you are interested.
