A first edition of The Toils of Yoshitomo: A Tragedy of Ancient Japan by Japanese playwright and writer Torahiko Kori, translated into English by H. M. Sainsbury and published by Selwyn & Blount in 1922.

The play dramatises the struggles and tragic fate of Minamoto no Yoshitomo against the backdrop of the political intrigue and military conflict of the Hōgen Disturbance, a defining episode in Japan's medieval history.

The volume is bound in light blue-grey paper-covered boards, with a tipped-on title label to the front board. Of particular interest is the scarce, illustrated original dust jacket, which accompanies the volume and is housed within a clear protective jacket cover.

The binding exhibits notable wear, particularly to the spine. The dust jacket shows signs of wear and tearing but remains present. There is some staining to the front and rear endpapers. The volume is housed in a protective plastic dust jacket cover.

This book is being sold for £200.
