The Theory of Relativity, by Albert Einstein - First English Edition

ree

The Theory of Relativity is perhaps Einstein’s most famous work, and one of the most famous scientific works in recent history. Einstein's theories on relativity were published originally in the early 20th century in German, but the book that we have for sale is the first English edition (a translation of the German third edition) of this seminal work, translated by Robert W. Lawson.

Our edition of The Theory of Relativity was published in 1920 by Methuen and Co. and the content is split into three parts: ‘The Special Theory of Relativity’, ‘The General Theory of Relativity’ and ‘Considerations on the Universe as a Whole.’ It includes, alongside the writing, five diagrams and multiple equations, and also (uniquely) some of the previous owner’s writings and musings on the work!

The frontispiece is a black and white sketched portrait of Einstein by Hermann Struck from 1920. The red cloth binding of the book is in good condition, with only some bumping and marks, and there is only a spattering of foxing on the edges; the text inside is unaffected.

This book is an icon of the twentieth century, not only in science, but in history and culture. It is perfect for anyone who is interested in physics, space, maths, iconic first editions of books, or scientific history. It is being sold for £1,000.
