On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences by Mary Somerville

Did you know that the term ‘scientist’ was first attributed to Mary Somerville in relation to her diverse work in this book?

Somerville (1790 – 1872) was a mathematician, scientist and polymath. Her second book, On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences, explores and explains mathematics, chemistry, physics, astronomy, geography and so much more.

The edition that we are selling is the sixth edition, published by John Murray in 1842 – a time when it was rare for a woman to be published at all, let alone under her own name.

The book has a black and white frontispiece of nebulae at the front, and there are 4 other plates at the rear, accompanied by an index and notes with diagrams.

It has a tan leather binging with marbled edges and endpapers, and even though the title on the spine has faded, it is still readable up-close.

This book is a great collection piece and perfect for anyone interested in antiquarian science books, famous historical scientists, old books written by women or landmark publications. It is being sold for £150.
