Letters from the Mountains by Anne MacVicar Grant

Letters from the Mountains; Being the Real Correspondence of a Lady, Between the Years 1773 and 1807 by Anne MacVicar Grant (1755–1838) is an account of eighteenth-century life and society, with particular emphasis on the landscapes, people and customs of the Scottish Highlands. Grant was a Scottish poet and writer whose work helped introduce readers to the scenery and culture of the Highlands during the Romantic period. The correspondence offers a valuable historical perspective on life, personal relationships and the changing social world of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
This three-volume set is the second edition, published in London in 1807. It was published by Longman, Hurst, Rees & Orme.
The three volumes are bound in brown leather, with raised bands to the spines and gilt decoration, including ornamental floral motifs and gilt lettering to the title and volume panels. All volumes feature marbled edges to create an elegant and cohesive finish and the traditional bindings give the set considerable period character and visual appeal.
The condition is consistent with the age of the books. The leather shows slight rubbing and some wear around the spine bands and lettering, particularly on the middle volume. The title page and preliminary leaves show slight foxing.
These are attractive early nineteenth-century volumes, with their original period bindings and gilt decoration still evident. A handsome historical set, suitable for collectors of antiquarian books, Scottish literature and Highland history.
This set is being sold for £175.
