J.R.R. Tolkien – The Lord of the Rings, Revised Second Edition, 1970
A complete three-volume set of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, comprising The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Revised Second Edition, Fifth Impression, 1970, published by George Allen & Unwin, Ruskin House.
Each volume is complete with its original fold-out map towards the rear. The maps remain bright, clean and free from tears or damage. The books themselves remain securely bound and are generally well preserved. All three volumes retain their publisher’s original dust jackets, each featuring the distinctive grey-green design and title of the individual volume. The dust jackets remain in very good condition, with only slight age-related discolouration, particularly around the rear edges and back panels. While volume 2&3 retain the original pricing, volume one’s price has been snipped.
Without the dust jackets, the volumes are bound in the publisher’s original red cloth, with gilt lettering to the spines. The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers display some minor discolouration to the cloth boards, consistent with age and previous use. Internally, the pages remain generally bright and clean, although all three volumes exhibit some foxing and age-related discolouration, particularly around the page edges.
A particularly charming feature of the set is a previous owner’s inscription, belonging to “Maggie”, neatly handwritten on the endpaper. This provides a small and appealing glimpse into the provenance and previous ownership of the set. Overall, a complete and attractive 1970 revised second edition set of The Lord of the Rings, retaining the original publisher’s dust jackets and maps.
